Mike is a proud husband, father, and dog owner - not necessarily in that order.
Mike moved to Las Vegas from East Texas as a child and has been a proud Las Vegas resident ever since. He graduated from Chaparral High School in 1992 and has lived in the 15th district off and on (mostly on) ever since.
Mike has an undergraduate degree in English education from UNLV. For the past 14 years, he has been teaching English in Clark County high schools. Mike loves teaching and plans to continue teaching in CCSD until retirement. He is currently working on a PhD in Multicultural Education. He looks forward to improving the lives of the people in this neighborhood and making the world a better place.
Mike has been an outspoken and passionate volunteer for many political causes over the years, beginning with Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign.
When he was working for the juvenile court system, the systemic problems were more than he could ignore. The issues of equality, class, justice, and simple fairness should always be apparent to anyone paying attention, but in some circumstances the problems become impossible to ignore. It was after this that Mike decided that the best way to approach these issues was to go to source: students. Mike considers teaching students to use their voices and to look at the world around them his greatest personal and professional achievement.
It's easy to sit around and complain. Everyone has a voice, and everyone has the opportunity to evaluate the world around them. Mike believes that, with your help and support, we can use our voices and change Nevada for the better.
